TOWNER, N.D.—When I was knowledge how to drive, Dad started me out with the pickup in the hay scope. Keep it in first gear ‘til you get the hang of it, he told me. However, the licensing organize forced me to learn another whole vehicular milieu — one with other cars and other drivers.

In place of of maneuvering around hay stacks and cows, I had to look out for cars that were directly there on the same road as me! Crazy stuff.

But in a miniature town with no stoplights and just several hundred people, a new driver could vulnerable as long as he could handle the one four-way stop and proportionate park. Sometimes it was hard to find two cars parked closely guarded enough together to practice parallel parking, so the driver’s ed tutor would have to give you another landmark like a light end and tell you to pretend that was where the second car was.

Menard looks for change of fortune at Daytona

Paul Menard hopes today is the day his destiny turns at Daytona  International Speedway.

The Eau Claire natural has been fast since arriving at the  superspeedway. But in both of his tuneup races, he's been a casualty of multi-car wrecks. Wrong unsuitable, wrong time.

But maybe, rightful maybe, today's Daytona 500 will be a dissimilar story.

"It's bit us twice," Menard said Saturday. "I have a funny feeling like the third time is our chance."

Seeking to leave out the  unpopular two-car drafts that  dominated last year's restrictor print races, NASCAR implemented new rules for this period. It's led to a hybrid style that combines tandem and bundle off racing. But it's also created some wreck-filled races. And that's bring in Menard a couple of fast cars.

In last Saturday's Budweiser Shootout, the Brickyard 400 champ quickly shot up from his 24th-place starting stand into the top 10. At one point, he was second. But on the ninth lap, he was spun out from behind and hit the partition off. His night ended early with a 23rd-position succeed finish.

Generous gift gives driver chance to make Daytona 500 field

Ann Arbor businessman Dusty Whitney displayed an act of benevolence by giving away nearly a million dollars of his Sprint Cup nation team's equipment to Detroit indigene Phil Parsons.

And Parsons put the bounty to good use, giving Michael McDowell the speculation to make the field for Sunday's Daytona 500. McDowell will be starting 11th in the No. 98 K-Angel Ford Fusion after racing into the hockey by placing sixth in one of Thursday's Gatorade Duels.

"I gave them everything I owned," said Whitney, who is still listed as the car proprietor and will be watching the race Sunday from the crew's pit box. "I'm still involved in the team, just not in hold back of it.

"I didn't want to hassle with selling the bits and getting pennies on the dollars and Phil's a gargantuan guy who is from Michigan and they were starting a new team. I was in Michigan all the continually last year, not in North Carolina dealing with the day-to-day operations (of racing band). I found out you can't run a team that way."
