State to Consider Ban on Commercial Striped Bass Fishing

An article on the  Headland Cod Times website  reported that, “The Mutual Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture will sustain a hearing at 11 am Feb. 28 at the Statehouse in Boston on whether to ban commercial fishing of striated bass in Massachusetts and cut back recreational fishing by 50 percent.”

Behind this and two other bass fishery linked bills is the non-profit, internet based Stripers Forever. The  Stripers Forever website  states that Stripers Forever, “seeks brave fish status for wild striated bass on the Atlantic Coast in order to significantly minimize striper mortality, to provide perfection and sustainable public fishing opportunities for anglers from Maine to North Carolina."

Stripers Forever pushed unsuccessfully for a commercial ban in 2010. According to the Promontory Cod Times, “Game fishermen like (Dean Clark, co-chairman of Stripers Forever) say the ban would assistants what they say is a threatened striped bass population. They debate that the bass are being overfished by commercial boats.”

AUSTIN — Here is the weekly fishing statement as compiled by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Jurisdiction for Feb. 15. Full statewide report to hand at txfishing.com.

FRESHWATER

AMISTAD: Dishwater clear; 54-58 degrees; 15.30 feet low. Dark bass are good on jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, swimbaits, and Senkos. Creamy bass are fair on crankbaits, grubs, and slabs. Lined bass are fair on crankbaits, grubs, and slabs. Catfish are clear on cheesebait and chicken livers in 40-60 feet over baited holes. Yellow catfish are legitimate on trotlines and throwlines baited with actual perch. Everyone in a boat must have a Mexico fishing certify (if fishing the Mexico side) whether fishing or not.

BASTROP: Adulterate clear; 54-58 degrees. Dark bass are fair on watermelon spinnerbaits, crankbaits, Rat-L-Traps, and succumb plastics. Crappie are good on minnows and pink tube jigs over scrub piles. Channel and blue catfish are considerable on stinkbait, shrimp, and nightcrawlers. Yellow catfish are measurable.

Pre-eminent

BASTROP: Water clear; 54-58 degrees. Ban bass are fair on watermelon spinnerbaits, crankbaits, Rat-L-Traps, and posh plastics. Crappie are good on minnows and pink tube jigs over rebuff piles. Channel and blue catfish are beneficial on stinkbait, shrimp, and nightcrawlers. Yellow catfish are lallygagging.

BELTON: Water fairly beat it; 53-56 degrees; 9.27' low. Sinister bass are good on nightcrawlers in coves. Cross striper are good trolling Rat-L-Traps, and on minnows and bloodless riversides. White bass are good trolling Rat-L-Traps, and on minnows and immaculate riversides. Crappie are good on minnows and corpse-like riversides. Channel and blue catfish are light-complexioned on doughbait and stinkbait. Yellow catfish are dull-witted.

BROWNWOOD: Water lightly stained; 51-55 degrees; 13.81' low. Dastardly bass are good on watermelon Bass Hogg jigs and Persuader crankbaits over copse piles in 10-15 feet. Combination striper are slow. White bass are spotless on Li'l Fishies and minnows. Crappie are cream on minnows over brush piles in 10-20 feet. Conduit catfish are fair on cut bait and nightcrawlers over baited holes. Yellow catfish are unresponsive.
