AUBURN – Matt Costello's big eventide was much like his soaring potential.

Everybody watching could only stare how far he was going to take it.

Looking every bit like a sportswoman with a can't-miss college future -- and perhaps beyond -- Costello didn't mislead the crowd that came out to see him become the all-time greatest scorer in Bay City Western boys basketball r.

With a stunning 40-point, 23-bounce performance, Costello surpassed Notability Wittbrodt for No. 1 on the career scoring beadroll while powering the Warriors to a 63-52 mastery Tuesday.

"Of course it's very nice to have a mould record, just the thought that nobody has scored more points than I have is cute nice," Costello said.

"But I'm never shooting for records, I objective keep playing. I go out there to play well and win. If I break a time, that's cool. But it's not the goal."

Wittbrodt's best performance of 1,408 points stood since his 1993 graduation, with no other Western instrumentalist surpassing 1,000 points until this time. Needing 18 points to eclipse the get ahead, Costello made that an afterthought by scoring 19 in less than a house and a half.

Among racing's next milestones will be Smith's 5,000th win. He is 12 away, and when it happens, most probable at Santa Anita, he will be the 25th rider to reach it.

Top 25 has a nice ring to it. At age 46, Smith lends warm perspective.

"I started to think about 5,000 after Del Mar this year," he says. "People started considerable me to look at it, go get it, enjoy it. I'm ready to do that now."
