With Valentine’s Day behind us, gone from the cumulate shelves are the candy hearts, boxes of chalky, generic chocolates, and all the other fondness-themed, bad-for-you foods that signal the passenger of the Hallmark holiday. You breathe a breathe of relief that you were able to make it through February without indulging—or at least, indulging as much as you would have in years defunct.

Flipping through your calendar, March seems like slightly smooth sailing, as long as you can stand out to one Irish potato and one pint of Guinness (I am completely food-stereotyping here. I celebrated St. Patty’s Day once in my inviolate life in Hoboken, New Jersey. And, as I call back, it wasn’t even on St. Patty’s Day. What is that about? I’m sufficiently certain I marked the occasion with, like, a pinot grigio or something equally mirthful. I hate beer and wouldn’t be versed a Guinness from a cider from an O’Douls. Unstationary on …). You stop at March 31st (to want my mom a happy birthday), realizing that with the freak of this page you will come face-to-expression with your biggest food-related invitation since the whole Thanksgiving/Hanukkah/Christmas/New Years debacle …

Warm welcome in snowy Japan

It's 10 below zero as the world's driest snow drifts to turf as feathery flakes on Japan's northern islet, Hokkaido.

Jet-black clouds laden with stick-dried snow from the Siberian steppe cylinder across the East Sea/Sea of Japan and sprinkle their light-bulb and dry cargo  like reward sugar on a tea cake.

This northern hemisphere winter has generated recording snowfalls  the biggest dumps in more than 60 years. Snow has paralysed cities across Europe and North America. And while the civil guard has been scrambled to dig Hokkaido's old folks out of their snowed-in homes, Japan will never let the coldest opportunity ripe spoil a good party.

Hokkaido is celebrating  its 63rd snow carnival, Yuki-matsuri, during the first week in February.

All of Japan celebrates this spectral harvest  with extra craze after surviving what they call "3/11", the horrific tsunami and earthquake of Stride last year. But nowhere is it busier or more spectacular than in Sapporo, Hokkaido's Auckland-sized (pop: 1.8 million) leading city, where two million visitors prosper  each year in February to see the unparalleled constructions lined up in the city's primary park and downtown streets.
